The mechanism is used for longitudinally folding a continuously moving (V) length of tape (1) which, after folding, is partly cut at intervals to produce a coherent chain of labels, or completely cut at intervals to produce individual labels. It comprises a pre-forming (10) unit (2) consisting of a ring with passage for the tape, a folding (11) slot (15; 27,28,29) unit (3) arranged at a given distance downstream of the unit (2), and a (heated) pressure unit (4; 19,20) to produce the fold creases. The ring (2) may have a round passage and a radially (and circumferentially) adjustable forming finger (8,24). There may be a second folding unit (3') followed by a pressure unit (4') downstream of the unit (4).
