Tram system using over head current supply - energises AC tram drive via transformer and rectifier providing same voltage as auxiliary battery supply

The trams (3) each incorporate an electric propulsion drive (4) which can be selectively coupled to supply batteries (5) or to the overhead current line (1). The latter is coupled to the AC network, with the current obtained from the current take-off mounted on the top of the tram (3) fed to the DC drive (4) via a transformer (6) and a rectifier (7), to provide a DC voltage corresp. to that provided by the batteries (5). A switch (8) is provided between the drive (4) and the batteries (5), with a second switch (9) between the current take-off (2) and the transformer (6). The batteries (5) can be recharged from the overhead line (1) when waiting and from the drive (4) acting as a generator during braking.
