The invention relates to the synthesis of ammonia where the crude hydrogen gas is subjected to washing with liquid nitrogen. A part of the at least partially cooled nitrogen stream (9) is added at (24) via the valve (21) into the washed gas stream (11) being heated. Benefit is thus obtained of most of the cryogenic effect due to the effect of nitrogen-washed gas mixing without, however, causing the formation of a two-phase stream which is then very difficult to reintroduce homogeneously into the exchanger.
