PURPOSE:To improve the sensitivity of detection of a member existing behind a wall or the like by a construction wherein an oscillating transformer is shaped in a bar and the opposite ends thereof in the axial direction are made to be magnetic poles, while the oscillating transformer is so disposed that the axis thereof is perpendicular to an electrode plate. CONSTITUTION:A bar-shaped oscillating transformer T is fitted to a printed circuit board 4 through a holder 6. Moreover, the transformer T is so disposed that the direction of connection between the two magnetic poles thereof is perpendicular to the board 4, and one magnetic pole is made to be close to a wall surface so as to detect a metal. Therefore the depth of detection can be made larger when the transformer T employed has the same size as usual ones, while the size of the transformer T can be made smaller when the depth of detection thereby is the same as that of usual ones. In addition, since the transformer T is disposed apart from an electrode plate 2 and the board 4 with the holder 6 interposed between, a magnetic field generated around the transformer T is hardly affected by the metal parts of the electrode plate 2 and the board 4, and consequently the depth of detection is increased. Besides, since the transformer T is shaped in a bar and one magnetic pole thereof is made to face the wall surface, the width of detection is narrowed and thus the accuracy in detection of position is improved.
