PURPOSE:To suppress the effect of a shadow and the presence of a background and thereby to enable the automatic detection of a moving body, by finding an integrated image of a binary differential image of an image obtained when the moving body is not present in an area of measurement and an image to be measured, and of a binary profile image obtained by emphasizing the profile on the basis of luminance distribution of the image to be measured. CONSTITUTION:An image obtained by photographing an area of measurement when a moving body is not present therein is stored as a reference image in a reference image memory unit 1. Moreover, an image to be measured which is obtained by photographing said area for detecting the moving body is inputted to an input unit 2 of the image to be measured. A differential image preparing unit 3 is supplied with the reference image and the image to be measured, from the memory unit 1 and the input unit 2, respectively, and prepares a differential image as a binary image. A profile image preparing unit 4 receives the image to be measured as an input from the input unit 2 and extracts only a profile component in the image to be measured, so as to prepare a binary image thereof. An integrated image preparing unit 5 receives the differential image and the profile image as the binary images from the preparing units 3 and 4 respectively and calculates a product of picture element values for each identical picture element number. By this method, the moving body alone can be represented separately from a shadow and a background.
