A short liquor/cold dwell dyeing process for woollen carpets uses a liquor ratio (goods : liquor) of 1 : 0.5 to 1 : 5. The non-thickened dyeing liquor used to perform the process contains, per 1000 parts of liquor, 30 to 300 parts of a hydrotropic agent such as urea or thiourea, 0.5 to 5 parts of a nonionic or weakly anionic surfactant, 5 to 15 parts of formic acid or acetic acid and about 5 parts of sodium bisulphite. The process is carried out at a dyeing temperature of 15 DEG C to 60 DEG C. The carpets are then rolled up in reels and left to rotate for 1 to 48 hours. Dispensing with the conjoint use of thickeners permits better liquor migration.
