In an ultrasound investigation apparatus, which makes use of an angular sound head 4, which can be moved and turned in a free two-dimensional movement over the surface 3 of a material 1, means are required to determine the position of the sound emission point 8 of the sound head and the direction of the projection 7 of the sound path 5 on the surface of the material in order to use this to calculate the position of a point of reflection 2 in the interior of the material. These means consist of at least one light source 17 arranged on the sound head to emit at least three narrow light beams 18, 19, 20 with fixed mutual angles 21, 22 and fixed directions in relation to the sound head and at least one rectilinear line 23 of light-sensitive elements, which are struck by the light beams. In this way, the position and direction of the sound head can be determined with great precision, even if the sound head is moved quickly over the surface of the material. <IMAGE>
