The steel collet includes a collar (1) of large diameter intended to receive the inside end of a hairspring, and a pipe (2) with very thin walls and of substantially the same height as the collar. Prior to driving the collet onto the balance staff, the walls of the pipe (2) are slightly deformed so as to offer portions which are pushed radially outwards and are linked by other portions which have been allowed to be folded back radially inwards. The plastic deformation and creep thus induced lead to excellent retention of the collet on the staff despite easy driving in and easy referencing. <IMAGE>
