Tert. alcohol is prepd. by allowing isoolefin or a hydrocarbon mixt. contg. it to react with water in the presence of a solid catalyst. Improvement is that neo type polyhydric alcohol or its deriv. is present. The velocity of hydration of isobutylene and the conversion are promoted, and tert. butyl alcohol can be obtd. in high yield while suppressing undesirable side-reaction. A neo type polyhydric alcohol has a considerably higher b.pt., which makes it easy to separate from tert. butyl alcohol, therefore, the polyhydric alcohol can be used repeatedly. Isobutylene can be isolated from a hydrocarbon mixt. contg. isobutylene by the above method.
