<p>The tower consists of an upper cylinder (I) contg. a coaxial pipe down which the ore is fed towards a lower cylinder (II) which is coaxial with cylinder(I). The ratio of the diameters of cylinders(I:II) is 1.4-1.6:1, whereas the ratio of their heights is 0.5-1.5:1. In the lower cylinder (II) is an inlet pipe for the liq. phase, and also a bottom sump employed to remove the insol. solids left after leaching with the liq. phase. The liq. phase travels upwards towards outlets at the top of cylinder (I); and the conical junction between the two cylinders(I,II) causes a sepn. of ore particles with a size between -1.5mm and +0.75mm. A high degree of extn. is achieved in a tower with low initial and operating costs.</p>
