A catalytic converter (10) has a monolithic catalyst (14) with a housing (12), a gas seal (18) which is arranged around part of the outer surface of the catalyst, a wire network (20) which is wound around the remaining part of the outer surface of the catalyst and is arranged between the inner surface of the housing and the outer surface of the catalyst, and a protective member (22) which is arranged between the inner surface of the housing and the outer surface of the gas seal. In this arrangement, the protective member (22) is fixed to the wire network (20) so that the gas seal (18) is protected against damage due to a contact with the housing when the catalytic converter is assembled. <IMAGE>
