A toner recovery device is specified which is provided with a filter, which is arranged in the track of toner gathered from an image carrier, and with a device which is used to exert through the filter onto the gathered toner a force which causes the gathered toner to pass through the filter, as well as to exert a force which causes the gathered toner to move along the filter. The gathered toner containing foreign bodies and solidified toner is loosened on the filter in the toner recovery device in such a way that the solidified toner is divided into extremely small particles, while at the same time the foreign bodies float up over the gathered toner and are prevented from passing through the filter.
