The metal locator has a search coil whose electrical characteristics change in the proximity of an electrically conducting or ferromagnetic object. The change is detected by an evaluation circuit which produces a corresp. audible or visible signal. The locator may be operated whilst the user's hands remain free. This is achieved by mounting the search coil (3) on a carrier frame (17) attachable to the shoe (3) of the searcher. The coil is arranged directly in front of the toe of the shoe. The frame is movable parallel to an imaginary plane extending in the axial direction of the shoe and perpendicular to its sole. When the shoe is raised from the ground the base of the frame remains parallel to the sole.
