The machine body, guided along a face conveyor, with loading ramp, and one or more transverse cutter rollers, comprising hub with helical cutting coil armed with loosening tools, hinged to the machine body with a cutter arm equipped with a freely cutting chain, is incorporated in equipment for extracting coal by hewing, esp. in thin seams. With the external dia. of the cutter spiral (22) virtually constant, that of the hub unit (17) tapers outwards to zero, from the lowest cutting point, or from the cutter chain (13) driving the roller (10), toward the face conveyor (1). The rotation-symmetrical hub unit may have a convex curved surface (18), while its tip (20), facing the rear, may in the vertical plane running through the leading edge (21) of the loading ramp (7). This permits smooth transfer of coal to the conveyor, even in very thin seams.
