So that, in motor-operated windows of motor vehicles, it is ensured, using simple means, that when the window closes objects, for example fingers, are not pinched and injured, a monitoring device is proposed consisting of a deformable conductor (tube 4) for electromagnetic waves, preferably light waves, which is arranged at the leading edge (6) of the window pane (1) and/or at a closing edge, lying opposite the said edge, of the window frame, a transmitter-receiver arrangement (3, 5) for measuring the intensity of the waves which pass through the conductor and are attenuated when the conductor is deformed, and an evaluation circuit which is connected to the transmitter-receiver arrangement (3, 5), is connected to the window lifting drive and, when the attenuated wave intensity occurs, prevents the window closing.
