The upholstering machine used has a work supporting surface, above which is supported a nailing mechanism, as in 3009422. After a padding layer (13) has been applied to a seat base (14) and supported on spacers (15) above the work surface (16), the covering layer (12) is applied and bent over around the edges. This operation can be carried out by using a set of brushes (7) arranged all round the edge of the base, matching its shape and lowered vertically by a predetermined distance (A). Another method uses rotary brushes mounted on a spindle rotating about a horizontal axis parallel to the edge. Alternately grooved rollers, rotating about vertical axes and held against the edge may be used.
