An optical detector converts the light reflected from the test strip into an electrical signal suitable for a display on an indicator contg. a series of adjacent light emitting diodes (10), incandescent lamps, liquid crystal elements, plasma elements, or fluorescent elements. The indicator has straight or curved scales (13) showing the measures conc. units corresp. to the measured value. The scales are interchangeable for different substances and each scale automatically sets the appropriate range. The strips are inserted via a cover with a built-in press. mechanism serving as a calibration standard.
