A description is given of a fluorescence liquid-crystal display device of the reflection type, which contains in a liquid-crystal material a fluorescent material which generates a fluorescence which is a function of absorption and extinction, and comprises a filter element which reflects the fluorescent radiation (fluorescence) and/or the absorbed radiation (absorption or extinction) and which, if required, has a low reflectivity for the radiation which differs from the fluorescent radiation (fluorescence) or the absorbed radiation (absorption or extinction), the result being a substantial rise in the display contrast of the display device.
