HYDROCARBON- OR HETEROSUBSTITUTED-LACTONE CARBOXYLIC ACIDS, ESTERS OR AMIDES

A hydrocarbon or heterosubstituted-lactone carboxylic acid or an ester or amide thereof is obtained by reacting a molar proportion of a mono-unsaturated hydrocarbyl-substituted C4-C10 dicarboxylic acid or an ester or anhydride with one molar proportion of a peracid, an alkyl hydroperoxide or hydrogen peroxide oxidiz-ing agent or a thiylating agent at -20.degree.C to 100.degree.C. If an anhydride or a diester is used as reactant, then the oxidation or thiylation is followed by treatment with water, an alcohol or an amine to lactonise the product. If an amide is to be produced, a lactone acid is first formed and then reacted with an amine. Thelactones are useful in the production of oxazoline derivatives which have sludgedispersant properties in lubricating oil.
