The percussion mechanism comprises a control body (15) which is actuated by the anvil (12) of the percussion hammer and controls radial air passages arranged in the guide tube (2) of the percussion mechanism. The control body can thus control the air-compensation bore (17), determining the air cushion, in the area between piston (3) and striker (6) as well as the idling bores (18) determining the damping air cushion building up in front of the striker. The percussion hammer is therefore exposed to virtually no wear during idling.
