A novel 5,7-dihydroxytetrahydroisoquinoline derivative having the formula: (I) wherein R is trimethoxyphenyl, is prepared either by hydrolysis of a compound having the formula: wherein R1 is an organic acyl group and R is same as above, or by catalytic hydrogenation of a compound having the formula: wherein R3 is hydrogen or benzyl and R is same as above. The 5,7-dihydroxytetrahydroisoquinoline derivative (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof is useful as a bronchodilator.
