A slide fastener is made by feeding a pair of continuous stringer intermittently producing a fastener element free gap by ultrasonically cutting while simultaneously severing to give a fastener length and fusing the edges of the gap and tape ends, these being of thermoplastics. A top end stop is formed at the same time as the severing. The cut length is moved on and the element rows sepd. over a limited distance to allow introduction into a slide which re-engages the rows while the length continues to move to a further station where a bottom end stop is mounted, pref. by ultrasonic processing.
