<p>A top-loading automatic washing machine has a safety latch comprising a rod (5) with a hooked end which engages a spring detent (7) at the front edge of the machine lid (6). The rod is mounted in a guide-slide (1) affixed to the machine casing (2), which allows the lid to be raised only a limited distance, i.e. the length of the rod, before the detent must be released by hand, enforcing a compulsory pause in the opening of the lid. This arrangement allows sufficient time for the drum to be braked, if running at high speed when the lid is opened, to a slow speed which ensures that it is quickly arrested when the lid is fully opened.</p> |
