The smooth release mechanism is particularly for an airgun trigger, the latter acting on a catch engaging with the piston when cocked. The trigger (1) pivots on a spindle (2) passing through the breech (4), and is a bell-crank lever whose upper horizontal arm (11) is of greatly reduced length (1) compared with that (L) of the vertical actuating arm (12), so as to produce a multiplying effect. An intermediate lever, rocking freely in the breech, couples the end (61) of the catch (6) to the horizontal trigger arm, and tilts the catch free on firing.
