Prior to the receipt of a charge of molten metal, a ladle (11) is heated by a direct flame, by applying a seal (20) to the rim (14) of the ladle (11) and directing an air stream through a heat exchanger (21) and to the ladle (11), mixing fuel with the air and igniting the mixture and directing the flame into the ladle chamber (15), and exhausting the gases of combustion from the ladle chamber (15) back to the heat exchanger (21). The seal (20) applied to the rim (14) of the ladle (11) comprises a network of refractory fiber modules (54) mounted in a common plane. A heat shield (58) is mounted adjacent the seal (20) and is sized and shaped to telescopically receive the rim (14) of the ladle (11), and a flow of air passes between the heat shield (58) and the rim (14) of the ladle (11) to the air stream as the air stream moves toward the ladle chamber (15).
|
