Luminescent raster screen - has array of micro-lenses collimating output image along viewing axis

A luminescent raster screen has a set of gas discharge cells with luminescent coatings behind an array of microlenses (L) to collimate the light output along a viewing axis and enhance the intensity of the display. The lenses are plano-convex with the flat sides facing the screen, or can be cylindrical shaped. The refractive index of the lenses is selected w.r.t. the pod walls and the raster frame to prevent dispersion so that max. brightness is directed along the viewing axis. The lenses can be transparent to selected colours when mounted in front of a multi-coloured screen.
