An internal combustion engine is described, which has an inlet port, which is divided into first and second inlet passage sections, which lead to a first and second group of cylinders respectively. The second inlet passage section has a shut-off valve on its inlet side, which can be closed in order to isolate the second group of cylinders from the inlet port when the load of the internal combustion engine is lower than a predetermined value. A main fuel feed device feeds a controlled quantity of fuel into the inlet port. An auxiliary fuel feed device is provided, which feeds a predetermined quantity of fuel into the second inlet passage section downstream of the shut-off valve for a predetermined period, when the load of the internal combustion engine is greater than the predetermined value.
