Simulated marble or onyx article is made by applying a thin clear polyester gel coat to a mould, applying a thicker filled polyester layer to the gel coat, and when it has partially cured, forming a pattern of grooves in it and filling the grooves with a coloured cpd. A layer of polyester bound fibres is then applied and rolled followed by an outer filled polyester layer. After the layers are permitted to fully cure, the article is removed from the mould. Large articles such as bathtubs or wash basins can be made which are cheap, strong and shatter-proof.
