The locking system for the lifting platform (10) for vehicle maintenance and repair is engaged and disengaged to free a swinging arm (12) acting as the locking member. The arm has a forked end whose members (17,18) are secured by a block (20) locked by a screw (16) at the edge of the platform, to form the pivot. On the axis (14) of this block is an operating button (38) with a spring (39) above it, controlling the locking members above. These include two concentric ring shaped coupling members (30,40) with interlocking teeth (32,41). When a plate (33) above them is lifted by the spring the inner ring (40) is disenqaged from the outer ring (30) so that tongues (50,51) projecting from the outer ring are disengaged from retaining recesses (27,28) in the swinging arm, allowing it to rotate to the disengaged position.
