The ball or roller bearing to support vehicle wheels which are fitted on the inner race of the bearing with a brake drum or brake disc, has holes in an extension of the inner race which act like a radial-flow fan when the wheel revolves. The air flow induced thereby is directed against the wheel bearing and into passages at the back of the brake disc to cool bearing and brake. The inner race (16) of the ball bearing (6) has holes (15) in the flange (4) carrying the brake disc (3) and the wheel (1) which act like a radial fan. The induced air flow (17) partly cools the brake disc through passages (5) and partly the outer race (7). The lubricating oil supply (13) for the homekinetic coupling (11) of drive shaft (14) to inner race communicates through holes (18) with the oil reservoir (8) of the bearing (6). This effects a pressure lubrication at a pressure which rises with the square of the wheel speed.
|
