The flange walls (3,4) of the coil former for netting wire extend conically at an angle (alpha) between 20 to 45 deg., preferably 30 deg. For the wire coiling the respective machine incorporates a device determining the change-over points of a coiling drive. For this purpose a computer determines the instantaneous coil diameter from the velocity of the netting wire and the coiling speed, as well as the rated change-over point of the winding drive in dependence on the coil diameter. Then the rated change-over point is compared with the actual value of the position of the wire laying drive. The computer comprises an electronic divider, summator, multiplier and a comparator in series connection. A series representing the coil speed is applied to one divider input, while to its other input is applied a signal representing the feed velocity of the netting wire.
