The retainer is intended for a supply hose for dental instruments carried on a console. The hose is engaged by the retainer when the respective tool is inserted in its holder. The retainer a frictional drive acting on the supply hose in the direction of its retention. The drive is connected to a switch, actuated on the tool suspension by the holder. The connection in such that the hose retainer retracts the hose on the instrument suspension. Pref. a second switch is connected to a swivelling hose guide, feeding the hose to the drive, so that it disconnects the drive when a preset leverage force of the hose on the guide has been exceeded. A third switch may be coupled to a swivelling hose compression member in such manner that the motor is connected, via the first two switches, to a power source only when the hose is pressed against the frictional drive.
