PURPOSE:The flame-resisting treatment and carbonization treatment of acrylonitrile fiber are effected subsequently in an oxidative atmosphere and an inert atmosphere at lower temperature than a specific one to produce the titled fiber with increased elongation as well as improved strength and elasticity and high impact strength. CONSTITUTION:Acrylonitrile fiber is subjected to the flame-resisting treatment in an oxidative atmosphere, e.g., in the air, at 200-300 deg.C to make the density of the fiber 1.30-1.45g/cm<3>, preferably 1.32-1.42g/cm<3>. Then, the carbonization treatment is effected in an inert atmosphere under elongation, preferably 100-130% elongation so that the nitrogen content becomes 10-20wt% to produce high- strength and high-elongation carbon fiber of higher than 200kg/mm.<2> strength, 5- 20ton/mm.2 elasticity and more than 1.5% elongation. EFFECT:Since the carbonization furnace is required to resist a temperature lower than 1,000 deg.C, the facilities become inexpensive and the production cost becomes low. |
