A process for separation of zirconium- and hafnium tetrachlorides from a mixture comprising such chlorides, the process comprising : introducing said mixture of tetrachlorides into a closed system; heating at a vaporization zone (2), the mixture, which exists as liquid at least partially, to a temperature of at least approximately 440 DEG C under a pressure of at least 25 atms. to cause generation and upward flow of vapor; at a condensation zone (4) over said vaporization zone, continuously condensing and flow down a substantial part of ascending vapor back to the vaporization zone (2), thus transferring hafnium tetrachloride gradually to a remaining small part vapor; removing the vapor phase as enriched in hafnium tetrachloride from the system; maintaining the pressure condition substantially throughout the vaporization; and recovering from the vaporization zone (2) zirconium tetrachloride substantially of hafnium content.
