CONSTITUTION:A manual sub-scanning type reader is provided with a detector FD having photo couplers PCa, PCb, Schmitt circuits SCa, SCb, and the amount of floating of the reader from the original plane is detected with the couplers PCa, PCb and capacitors Ca, Db are charged. When the potential of the capacitors Ca, Cb exceeds a threshold value to be set, a high level signal is outputted to the circuits SCa, SCb and the output of a NOR circuit is made low in the level.
