PURPOSE:To facilitate coating and mounting to an electrode and prevent the membrane from being damaged by the electrode by constituting a diaphragm for an alkali chloride electrolytic cell of a diaphragm type of a fluorine-contg. cation exchange membrane having a specific carboxylic group. CONSTITUTION:In a diaphragm cell producing caustic alkali and chlorine by electrolyzing an aqueous soln. of alkali chloride, a fluorine-contg. cation exchange membrane contg. carboxylic acid group is used as a diaphragm in place of asbestos. This exchange membrane, the fluorine-contg. cation exchange membrane, the carboxylic acid group is -(COO)mX (X is alkali metal or -NRR', wherein R, R' are hydrogen or lower alkyl groups, and m is valency of X) as a general formula under electrolysis of alkali chloride is mounted to the electrode in the state of the formula -COOL (L is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1-20 carbon numbers) in an ion exchange group. The membrane is soft, is easy to mount and is less damaged by the electrode. |
