Protein-based feedstuffs are protected against bacterial desamination by reacting the proteins with short-chain aliphatic aldehydes or aldehyde-formers to form a surface layer which protects them against decomposition in the paunch of ruminants. The larger part of the proteins in the feedstuffs is not chemically changed in the paunch of ruminants so that more amino-acids are available for growth. The process is economical as it does not require long drying times. The proteins are adequately protected by a surface layer but are not changed chemically. The higher availability of amino-acids recycles more urea to the paunch via the ruminohepatic circulation to aid bacterial growth.
