Electrooptical cell, in particular for display purposes, having an active working electrode having an intercollatable layer structure, in particular graphite, a counter electrode and an ion conductor arranged between the two electrodes, as well as, optionally, a reference electrode. When an electric voltage is applied, ions are inserted from the ion conductor into the layer structure, resulting in a visible optical change in the surface of the working electrode.
