Sulpho-free basic azo compounds of the formula <IMAGE> are obtained by coupling the diazo compound of an amine the formula <IMAGE> with a coupling component of the formula <IMAGE> to form a compound of the formula <IMAGE> and alkylating the compound of the formula IX or X with a compound of the formula R2-A or R3-A and then quaternising the product with a compound of the formula R2-A or R3-A. The symbols are defined in Claim 1. The compounds are useful for dyeing or printing non-textile textile materials, for example plastics, leather or paper.
