In an apparatus for converting biomass into energy having an anaerobic fermentation chamber (4) which can be closed gas-tight and which can be charged via a supply line (10) with pumpable biomass and has a gas outlet (8), a high dry matter content is achieved in a simple manner by designing the anaerobic fermentation chamber (4) as a vertical tank which has at least one collecting channel (11) which is located at the filling height and extends over the entire width of the tank and which is connected via a downpipe (12) to an inlet (18) of a mixing device (14) which is located in the region of the base (2) of the fermentation chamber and is connected by another inlet (19) to the supply line (10) and whose outlet opens into the anaerobic fermentation chamber (4) in the region of the base of the fermentation chamber approximately underneath the collecting channel (11). <IMAGE>
