PURPOSE:To obtain methacyrlonitrile industrially and advantagenously, by bringing methacrolein into contact with ammonia and oxygen in the vapor phase at a high temperature in the presence of an oxide catalyst containing antimony and iron. CONSTITUTION:Methacrolein is brought into contact with ammonia and oxygen in the vapor phase at a high temperature in the presence of a catalyst to give methacrylonitrile. In the process, an oxide catalyst, expressed by the formula[A is Mo, W or V; C is Te, P or B; D is Cu, Mg, Ca, Sr, etc.; (a)-(d) are atomic ratios of elementary components based on the Sb10 atoms; (a) is 1-20; (b)- (d) are 0-10; (x) is the number of oxygen atoms satisfying the valence of the metals in the catalyst], and containing antimony and iron is used. The catalyst is usable alone, but is used by supporting on any carrier, e.g. silica or alumina, from the standpoint of the strength of the catalyst. The catalyst has a high activity and selectivity in the above-mentioned reaction with a long catalytic life. |
