An electronic handheld reading learning aid including a speech synthesis device. The speech synthesis device includes a digital filter, excitation circuitry, interpolation circuitry, a parameter decoder, a digital-to-analog converter and associated timing circuits. A non-volatile memory stores digital data representative of the correct spellings and coded filter coefficients sufficient to cause the speech synthesis integrated circuit to audibly pronounce a preselected list of words. Various modes of operation are utilized to enhance basic reading skills. |
