In addition to the head (14) from which the piston rod (16) projects, the cylinder (12) of a shock absorber contains a displaceable sleeve (26) which has a longitudinal passage formed by an annular space (30). Arranged between the sleeve (26) and the head (14) is a helical compression spring (28). The piston rod (16) carries a ring (18) which can be brought to bear against the sleeve (26) towards the end of the extension travel of the shock absorber in order to press the said sleeve in the direction of the head (14) against the force of the helical compression spring (28) and at least partly close the longitudinal passage (30). Towards the end of the extension travel of the shock absorber, the cushion of hydraulic fluid between the head (14) and the sleeve (26) is compressed and thereby damps the impact at the end of the travel. <IMAGE>
