An ocean float for surveying oceanic surface currents is a freely drifting buoy emitting infrared radiation and capable of being detected by an infrared line scan system. Pref. the buoy emits at approximately 40 deg.C. It has an area of at least 1 square m. The buoy may contain a passive radiant heat emitter system operated by solar heat as the energy source. It may be constructed as an infrared reflector. With this arrangement the buoy can be detected without needing to be of the large size required for visual detection and observation by aircraft. It can be used for continuous monitoring of currents. The buoy may be of plastics material such as thermoplastics cellulose derivs. and have metal plates below the transparent surface coated with a matt black facing. |
