PURPOSE:To increase the discharge current without making the device large by glow discharging between the first electrode and second electrode which form a coaxial doubled cylinder and then switching the counter part of arc discharge of the anode, from the first elecrode with a smaller diameter to both electrodes. CONSTITUTION:A first electrode 11 with a smaller diameter and second electrode 12 with a larger diameter are provided on an insulator 13 coaxially to form a doubled cylinder and a hollow cathode 10 is constituted. The switch 15 is turned on, and switches 17, 19 are turned off to apply a high voltage between both electrode from a power source 16, and the glow discharge is initiated between both electrode, covering the entire range. Then the switch 19 is turned on to start arc discharge between the electrode 11 and anode 14. Then the switch 15 is off and switch 17 is turned on to shortcircuit both electrode, and the electrode 12 also becomes effective as a cathode. Thus the glow discharge is prevented from concentration on the end of the hollow cathode, the life of the hollow cathode is improved because of its increased arc discharge area of the electrode, and the arc discharge current can be increased without making the device large. |
