A patient lifting decive has a pivotally mounted boom liftable by a hydraulic ram (14) which is extended by pumping hydraulic fluid from a reservoir (18) to a ram chamber (36) by means of a pump piston (32) reciprocable by a pump handle (28). For lowering of the boom the handle (28) is moved beyond the end of the suction stroke of the piston to depress a plunger (58) and open a return valve (48).
