In order to silence and deflect large gas flows from aircraft engines, a box is provided which is enclosed on three sides by walls of absorption material and in front of whose centre wall a guide element is arranged. In order to improve the sound absorption and to dissipate the gas flow, it is provided according to the invention that, as the guide element, a metal-mesh grid (2), which is transparent to sound, is arranged inclined at an angle of 65-80 DEG to the horizontal and against the incident-flow direction of the gas flow. <IMAGE>
