From certain changes of the engine speed the electronic device detects whether or not an engine is knocking and then, by the method according to the invention, optimally adjusts the ignition timing of the engine. Neither a pressure sensor nor a vibration sensor is needed for this. The method according to the invention is based on the finding that in a knocking engine, sudden speed changes occur which are caused by erratic pressure changes in the cylinders. In the device, a crankshaft angle sensor (1) generates a crankshaft angle pulsed signal (a). A timer unit (2) emits a program interrupt signal (i) and determines whether or not engine knocking is present. A micro computer (3) generates an ignition timing signal (f) and a closing angle signal (e), so that an ignition signal generator (4) thereupon emits a corresponding ignition signal (j). <IMAGE>
