In order to control, in particular the downhill braking of railway gravity shunting systems, it is important to know when the vehicles have been affected by the brakes. For constructional reasons it is not possible to arrange at the point of the brake at which the brake bars grip fully, a rail contact via which such a report could be triggered. This contact is always arranged in front of the brake and therefore, hitherto, has triggered the braking report too early. In accordance with the invention there is provision for a vehicle which travels over the rail contact (IG) when a preceding section of the brake is free, to input a length value, corresponding to the preceding section, into a pulse counter (IZ), and for the pulse counter to be subsequently reset incrementally in accordance with the forward movement of the vehicle. The resetting pulses (RI) are output here by a radar device (R) which detects the vehicle moving forward. Whenever the pulse counter (IZ) moves into the zero position, it is loaded with a length value which corresponds to the distance between the respective following axle and the axle which is travelling straight ahead. This length value was determined when the respective following axle actuated the rail contact (IG). The timing of the zero crossovers of the pulse counter (IZ) designates the times at which vehicles arrive at the effective braking range of the brake. <IMAGE>
