Cyclo-dodeca-tri:ene prodn. by catalytic trimerisation of butadiene - using insol. polymer or inorganic solid with benzene rings to increase yield

Cyclododeca-1,5.9-triene (I) prodn. is carried out by catalytic trimerisation of butadiene (II) using a catalyst of Ti halide and an alkyl Al halide in the presence of (I) as diluent. Reaction is carried out in the presence of solid crosslinked organic polymers (IIIA), which are insol. under the reaction conditions, or inorganic solids (IIIB) which contain (un)substd. benzene rings. (IIIA) is pref. highly crosslinked polystyrene and pref. (IIIB) is glass microspheres with phenyl gps. on the surface. (III) is pref. also coated with Ti halide. Pref. a conventional aromatic diluent is also employed. The (II) uptake catalytic activity and (I) yield are increased, the process is suitable for continuous operation and working up is improved.
